In the study of military doctrine, establishing an identity for “what is military doctrine?” is most important and fundamental. Identity is explained in many ways, the core of which is definition and status. However, as the definition and status of military doctrine in the ROK military are ambiguous, it is necessary to establish it properly. Then, the study was led with the research question, “What is the definition of military doctrine?” and “What is the status of military doctrine?”
The purpose of this study is to provide the reflections to understand the definition and status of military doctrine, which is the core of establishing the identity of the ROK military doctrine.
The research method was combined with empirical insight centered on the literature review of the US, especially Army doctrine closely linked to the ROK military doctrine. The research focused on seeking to derive implications. And through this, ultimately, the research identified and suggested what contents should be reasonably accepted in order to develop the ROK military doctrine.
The following two implications were derived from the review suggested above. First of all, with respect to definition, by establishing  this study demonstrates that the object of military doctrine is military operations, and that our attention, therefore, should be drawn to fundamental principles rather than TTPs. It also demonstrates that the hierarchy of operations can be structured by hierarchy of principles. Moreover, this implication results in discussions that enable the exploration of open knowledge. Next, with respect to status, this study suggests that military doctrine is distinguished from other bodies of knowledge. And this study places a particular emphasis on the distinction between the source of the military doctrine, the doctrine itself, and the application of the doctrine. Considering these implications, it can be said that the outcome of this study successfully construct validity and is applicable to the development of ROK military doctrine.
While this study has significant implications for its own right, it help us learn more about. First, it helps improve the sturcture of the academic system and knowledge system of military science. Second, it helps understand the mechanism of military doctrine development and provides chances for its debates. And finally, it provides a momentum for change in the organizational culture so that the military stresses the value of knowledge.
