An Evaluation of 50 Years of the ROK Military's Overseas Dispatch and Future Policy Suggestions

The Republic of Korea military's overseas dispatch has a history that stretches back over 50 years. Korea dispatched combat troops to the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, as part of the Post Cold-War, Korea joined the United Nations in July 1991, and this led to continuos participation in “International Peace Operations.” For examples, in the 1990s Korea mainly took part in the “UN Peacekeeping Operations” and in the early 2000s, especially during the 9/11 incident, it entered the “war on terrorism” and conducted peacekeeping operations as being part of “Multinational Forces Peacekeeping Operations”. Since the 2010s, Korea has diversified its  dispatch of troops oversea through the “Defense Cooperation Activities” with other countries under the concept of ‘comprehensive security.’
Korea has achieved various achievements in politics, economy, security, and military terms through overseas dispatch for the last 50 years. The overseas dispatch environment and demands for dispatching troops overseas have changed and will  continue to do so. Therefore, it is significant to appraise and review the past accurately and estimate a future value and direction of overseas dispatch. For this purpose, this study will first review and evaluate overseas dispatch activities over the past 50 years per period, and examine the environments and characteristics of ROK military's overseas dispatch. In addition, I would like to examine the recent international community's demands for, and trends in sending troops overseas, and suggest future directions and policy suggestions for overseas dispatch of Korea military. 
The overseas dispatch of the ROK military has not only contributed to international peace and stability, but has also become a fruitful tradition that enhances its position on the world stage and military development. Given that overseas dispatch of armed forces is an issue considered to promote coexisting peace and happiness in the global village and create 'Blue Ocean' that promotes peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula, the preparation of a long-term national strategy should be done and the military's preemptive measures should be taken immediately.
